On Sunday, August 24 Oshawa Public Libraries celebrated 150 years of library services and CUPE 960 was there. Of the 150 years of library services, CUPE 960 has been around since 1965 - which means we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary next year! We were happy to advocate for library services and find out why everyone loves libraries! Have a look!

Today CUPE 960 workers hosted an #IceBucketChallenge to raise funds and awareness for ALS and ALS research. Many of our members have family who are affected by neuromuscular disease. Every day three Canadians die from this disease. We put out the call to our members and allies to take the #icebucketchallenge and we've already raised over $200.00 from our membership. Thank you to our member, Janet, for suggesting this and to everyone who helped out today - whether it was getting water dumped on you, donating, or dumping the water! We nominated CUPE 129, CUPE 1764, and Rick Mercer. Also stepping up to the challenge were Oshawa politicians. We were happy to host Oshawa MPP Jennifer French, Deputy Mayor Amy England, and Mayor John Henry. They each proved to be great sports and delighted those of us who had the chance to take part in this challenge. It's amazing to see politicians not only supporting a great cause, but also supporting the library workers who provide such a vital public service to Oshawa. See you on Sunday at the 150th Anniversary Party! Join us on September 1 at Memorial Park for Labour Day! There will be festivities from 11-3. See you there! |
