CUPE 960 Adopts a Family for the Holidays

12/30/2014

Check out this guest post from our Social Committee co-chair, Sarah Waddell.  Thank you so much to our members for being so giving this holiday season!

In December, the social committee organized a sponsorship of a local Oshawa family for Christmas through the Big Brothers and Sisters of Oshawa-Whitby.  We received a family consisting of a mother, father and two girls aged 11 and 13. Over the span of 3 short weeks we managed to raise over $1000 in cash, gift cards and gifts. I am absolutely blown away by the generosity or our fellow staff members.

Some items of note that were donated:

  • Over $700 worth of gift cards to various locations including Walmart, President's Choice and Toys R Us.
  • An IPod, a DVD player and 2 full sets of bedding for the girls, including new blankets, pillows and sheets.
  • Bags full of new toys and food.
On Friday, December 19th, I dropped off a full car load to the Big Brothers and Sisters office in Oshawa and they were overjoyed and shocked by the amount of donations we had raised for our family.  They were very pleased and thought for a minute we had sponsored two families, just by the amount of gifts we had.

So thank you to everyone who donated, knowing that we gave a family in need a special Christmas is something that I hold very close to my heart.

Our collective agreement is expired. What does that mean?

  • The collective agreement stays active until the next one is negotiated.

When do we vote on the contract?

  • All members of CUPE 960 are eligible to vote on the memorandum of agreement. The committee will present their recommendation at a special meeting.

Steps for Collective Bargaining

  • Election of bargaining committee (March 2013)
  • CUPE 960 and library exchange proposals
  • Both parties continue to meet – this constitutes bargaining
  • Once the parties agree, the memorandum of agreement is sent to library board for final approval, the union then takes the agreement to the membership and it’s voted on.

CUPE 3902 made a really awesome bargaining flow chart to help illustrate the process. Have a look
