SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5 – GET ON A BUS TO #RALLY4FAIRNESS IN BONFIELD!
The Ontario Federation of Labour and CUPE is calling on all affiliates to rally on Saturday, October 5 in support of CUPE Local 4616 members in Bonfield, Ontario. These sisters and brothers, who provide municipal services to support people in the township, were forced into a defensive strike on August 1. The employer was demanding major concessions and threatened to impose terms and conditions at the close of bargaining. Earlier this month, the mayor fired 5 of the 16 workers. Take a stand for fairness! Take a stand against concessions! Take a stand against bullying! CUPE 960 is a small local, so we know what it would be like to need support of everyone! Let's support Bonfield! What: Rally to Support CUPE 4616 When: Saturday, October 5 @ 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Where: Bonfield Municipal Town Hall, 365 Highway 531 (off Highway 170) To arrange a bus from your union/community or to get bus info, please contact Laurie Hardwick, [email protected] or 416-571-3087. Click here for the rally flyer as a PDF or as an editable Word Document (so your can add local bus details). Share the Rally for Fairness event page on Facebook and promote using the hashtag #Rally4Fairness
We're very excited to share the plan with members at our September meeting. We will ask for a motion from the floor to adopt the plan and put it into place. We're already accomplished so much and are looking forward to discussion!
Hi Everyone!
We hope you've had a great summer! We've been a busy but productive executive this summer. There have been several grievances and some gains for our local. Here are some updates: We want to mention to please contact your steward if you are asked to bring in a doctor's note at anytime, regardless of what the contract states. We want to make sure this is being applied fairly. Remember, there is nothing in the contract that states we cannot go over 20 hours on desk a week. It used to be in job descriptions before the last JJEC process, but there has never been a stipulation in the contract about how many hours on desk. Schedulers try to keep it under 20 hours, but it can go over 20 and often does especially at Jess Hann and Northview. We are excited to announce that we will be handing out new CUPE 960 cards this month for you to carry. Our executive is working on securing discounts for carrying this card and will forward that information onto you as soon as we have it! We have started a campaign called 'Stand up for Fairness.' It is our goal, and the goal of CUPE National and CUPE Ontario, to have one-on-one discussions with each and every CUPE member! We will ask you concerns and comments and ask that you pledge to Stand Up for Fairness. Life is better with unions. When unions stand up for workers, practices that used to be unheard of (such as paid sick time, fair wages and parental leave) become the norm across the country. This raises the standard of living for all of us, providing us with the services and benefits that we enjoy. Please share this video with friends and family! http://youtu.be/vjjGFHSEjIU Visit http://www.standupforfairness.ca/ for more details!
