'Great Libraries have Great People': Oshawa Public Library workers celebrate Library Week10/26/2016 OSHAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 19, 2016) - Workers from the Oshawa Public Library, members of Local 960 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 960), today celebrated Ontario Public Library Week with sweet treats and a message that great libraries have great patrons and great people working for them.
"It's always great to see how much people in Oshawa love their libraries and today is no exception," said Tiffany Balducci, President of CUPE 960. Earlier today, library workers handed out postcards, buttons, bookmarks and candy treats at the Library's McLaughlin Branch to commemorate Public Library Week, which began October 16 and runs until October 22. Since 1985, Public Library Week has highlighted the vital contributions that public libraries make towards enhancing the quality of life for all residents. Across Ontario, CUPE library workers are marking the week with celebrations scheduled in 16 different communities. In addition to celebrating the contributions libraries and library workers make to their communities, Public Library Week provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of ensuring libraries and library workers have the resources and tools to best serve their communities, while providing important services and good jobs. "Libraries make our communities better places to live in, and that's cause for celebration in and of itself," said Maureen O'Reilly, who chairs CUPE Ontario's Library Workers Committee. "But while we're celebrating the libraries in our communities, it's also important to pay tribute to the thousands of people across the province who work every day to make our libraries great," she added. In this holiday season, we wish to thank CUPE 960 members and their families for their hard work and dedication over the past year. We can all be extremely proud of the work we’ve done in our workplaces and in our communities to make Oshawa a better place to live.
In 2016, we must continue building our union as a force for positive change. Together we will push for good jobs and fairness for all Canadians. Our solidarity is our strength. Have a happy and safe holiday season. Enjoy a well-deserved break with your friends and loved ones, and to those members who are working over the holidays - thank you so much for what you do! All the best. In solidarity, CUPE 960 Executive Tiffany, Teresa, Katy, and Rick Oshawa Public Library workers donated over $1,000 to help others in need this holiday season. CUPE Local 960 members fulfilled their annual tradition of donating funds, purchasing gifts, and delivering gifts to the adopted families in need this season.
The generous donations made by library workers through dress down “jeans” days and additional donations enabled Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oshawa-Whitby to assist two Oshawa families in need this holiday season. In all, Oshawa Public Library workers provided children and parents with shoes, clothing, undergarments, gift cards, toys and books, for the holidays. “We are very happy to help out again this year,” said Jennifer Hunt, chairperson of CUPE 960 Social Committee. “Everyone helps out at the library towards donating to the adopted families in need. Our managers and front-line workers each participate in the jeans days where each person donates $2.00 throughout the year.” “Library workers will be showering these families and children with gifts for the season to make their holidays a bit brighter,” stated CUPE 960 President, Tiffany Balducci. “Although the giving spirit is among our union culture year-round, the holidays provide CUPE 960 with the opportunity to help others during this special time of year.” CUPE Local 960 represents over 80 employees of Oshawa Public Libraries, proudly serving our community. OSHAWA, ON – October 19-26 is Library Week in Ontario, and library workers for the Oshawa Public Library McLaughlin Branch, members of Local 960 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 960) marked the occasion with postcards, buttons and some sweet treats.
“We wanted to take the opportunity to highlight the contribution libraries make to communities while celebrating Library Week, said Tiffany Balducci, president of CUPE Local 960. “Libraries are more than just buildings with books in them. They are places that have a profoundly positive impact on the communities where they stand. They are meeting places, community hubs, and spaces that enhance residents’ quality of life,” she added. The celebration and information session outside the Bagot Street branch coincided with National Public Library Month and Ontario Public Library Week. The event was organized by CUPE 960 and CUPE Ontario’s Library Workers’ Committee. The low-key public events are an opportunity for library workers to connect with the people they serve, as well as others, while highlighting the importance of libraries in the community. |
